ANIMALS -- FRANK O'HARA (1950)

Have you forgotten what we were like then
when were were still first rate
and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth

it’s no use worrying about Time
but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves
and turned some sharp corners

the whole pasture looked like our meal
we didn’t need speedometers
we could manage cocktails out of ice and water

I wouldn’t want to be faster
or greener than now if you were with me O you
were the best of all my days

NOTE:  “This male cardinalfish looks open-mouthed in astonishment at the magnitude of the task he’s taken on.  Definitely a new man of the marine world, the male is solely responsible for nurturing both the eggs and later the baby fishes, which he holds in his mouth.  This means dad goes without eating for four to five weeks, which shows an impressive degree of devotion to family life.  Does he once open his mouth to complain?  No, but he does open it, from time to time, so that his precious cargo are turned, cleaned and provided with oxygen.” – Caption description from Hello! Magazine, Number 1275, 6 May 2013.
