NO PROTECTION

Atlas was permitted the opinion that he was at liberty, if he wished, to drop the Earth and creep away; but this opinion was all that he was permitted.

A fight in which there is no way, at any stage, of getting any protection for one's back.  And in spite of knowing this, one keeps on forgetting it.  And even when one does not forget it, one seeks such protection all the same, solely in order to rest while seeking it, and in spite of the fact one knows one will pay for doing so.
