MERRY CHRISTMAS (SAMUEL JOHNSON'S PRAYER)

'

Almighty God, Who art the Giver of all Wisdom, enlighten my understanding with knowledge of right, and govern my will by Thy laws, that no deceit may mislead me, nor temptation corrupt me, that I may always endeavour to do good, and to hinder evil.  Amidst all the hopes and fears of this world, take not Thy Holy Spirit from me, but grant that my thoughts may be fixed on thee, and that I may finally attain everlasting happiness, for Jesus Christ’s sake.  Amen

    1. And to you both also. So far it's been a great day. Hoping to sustain the momentum.

      Love from us.

  2. Poor dear lovely Johnson, never quite able to acknowledge to himself what a good man he was, nor that his failures were merely part of the human cargo... all this an aspect of the deep modesty which is perhaps the most admirable of his virtues.

Hang on to that momentum, Curtis.

(More of a withdrawn than a festive day here, after too much medical trauma en famille -- a strictly shelter-in-place Christmas, I guess one might say.)

    1. Good morning. I hope you found some enjoyment yesterday. Our medical traumas were slighter than yours, certainly. Caroline suddenly "flamed on" with a flu I'm sure I gave her, so Jane and I went and visited Caroline's cousin's family for Christmas dinner without solo, which was too bad, except that the dinner and company were really fine. Now that Caroline's brother has returned to this area, Jane has the opportunity to grow up with a fine semblance of an actual "extended family." (In NY, based on me having no family at all, we really were an island nation.) Because of the insane road repair/closing practices here, I still got lost in both directions. Jane's "big present" arrives today, which should be fun. Caroline and I are mainly presenting each other with momentum (we hope) and some sound ideas for the new year. Your description of Johnson is perfect and, along with the beautifully chosen words and crafted sentences, are what makes the prayers so great and so unexpected. Love to you and Angelica. Curtis
