Startling

    Do not listen at doors.

On lawns in flannels, in garages, in golf clubs, talking, startling slightly at the shooting, the small disaster on the limitless plain, returning from matches after the streets are lit, who can protest at the words from the other room.

From W.H. Auden, The Orators, London, Faber and Faber Limited, 1932.
