Boxing Day Cat (From London Daily Photo)

"This is Hodge, Samuel Johnson's cat immortalised in Gough Square and in festive mood, albeit a trifle cold. The bronze is complete with oysters, which Johnson used to feed his cat; at the time they were plentiful and the food of the poor."

  1. But is not Boxing Day tomorrow since today is Sunday?

  2. Tomorrow, December 27, will be observed as a "Boxing Day" bank holiday in the UK, but it's my understanding that today is in fact observed as Boxing Day, Sunday worship notwithstanding. Various stories in today's UK press confirm this. It's an interesting question and it appears as though there had at one time been an attempt to move the "official" denominated Boxing Day to December 27 when Christmas fell on a Saturday in recognition of the priority of Sunday observance. However, this practice (or attempt at establishing a practice) has fallen into disuse. Another complication apparently has to do with which country you're speaking about in terms of the British Commonwealth. But thank you for asking and thank you very much for reading and writing. I commend to you the other Boxing Day posts: the Pappardelle alla Leonardo recipe is sensational (and will represent my last gustatory hurrah of 2011 ahead of my planned austerity and abstemiousness in 2011) and the Slapp Happy song Blue Flower (so sorry I couldn't find a link to the studio version) is exceptionally moving and beautiful. It's freezing and snowing here in Berwyn, PA, but I'm hoping that the storm largely misses us. That would make life much, much easier. An early "happy New Year" to you also. Curtis

  3. Jill: P.S.: I meant "my last gustatory hurrah of 2010", obviously. My next-to-last, or possibly next-to-next-to-last (or something like that) is about to occur as we're currently scouring the cupboards in the snowstorm and feeling really creative at the moment. I just walked my little dogs in the deepening snow and we're all so happy to be inside. Curtis

  4. Just raining as usual here, but we managed a three or four mile walk in between deluges. Happy Boxing Day. Jill

  5. It was a pretty good Boxing Day, the current great depression and threatening weather notwithstanding. We avoided the Sunday morning news shows (what's the point at this time of year, life?) and joined local humanity's main activity of stocking up on essential and desired provisions at the Acme, our local supermarket. I made sure the snow plower would arrive and then re-read some funny Peter Cook writings. The Eagles game this evening was canceled (to Caroline's displeasure) and now I'm just plotting the end of this year and the beginning of next year. I'm just hoping our niece Eudora makes it out of Philadelphia Airport tonight and I can find something diverting to watch on tv because I'm too tired and blurry to read. Curtis
